How far is it? Driving distance between states and cities

Driving miles, realistic drive time, and what the move costs, for 24 interstate corridors and 70 metro-to-metro pairs. Every distance is a real road figure; every time and dollar below is derived from it by the same model that prices the rest of the site.

Two numbers matter when you ask how far a move is, and they are not the same number. The first is your drive: at a blended 62 mph, a 1,000-mile corridor is about 16 hr 15 min of wheel time and closer to 18 hr 45 min once you stop for fuel and food. The second is your shipment: a van line quotes a multi-day delivery window on the same distance, because the trailer is carrying other households too. The tables below give you both, plus the 2-bedroom cost the distance implies.

How far is it between states?

24 interstate corridors, shortest first. Drive time includes fuel and rest stops. Delivery is the van-line window once your shipment is loaded. Cost is the market range for a 2-bedroom home on that distance.

How far is it between cities?

70metro-to-metro pairs, shortest first. These use each pair's own road mileage rather than the statewide average, so a Los Angeles departure and a San Diego departure to the same destination price differently, as they should.

How these distances and times are calculated

Distances are road miles, not straight lines. State corridors use a population-weighted figure between each state's main population centers, because a capital-to-capital number would describe a trip almost nobody takes. Metro pairs use that specific pair's real driving mileage. Where the two disagree, trust the metro pair: it is the more specific measurement.

Drive time is derived, not looked up. Wheel time is distance divided by 62 mph, a blended door-to-door average that sits below posted limits because real trips include metro approaches, construction, and weather. Realistic travel time adds 15% for fuel, meals, and rest, which is roughly what a full day of driving actually absorbs. Days on the road assume 9 hours behind the wheel at a brisk pace and 7 at a relaxed one, so a 2,650-mile haul lands at 68 days rather than a single heroic number.

Delivery windows are separate. A van line quotes a window, not a date, because the trailer consolidates several households heading the same direction and the driver is bound by federal hours-of-service limits. The practical consequence is that on any haul over a few hundred miles you will arrive before your furniture does. Pack a suitcase, medications, chargers, and anything you need for the first week separately.

Why distance and price are not proportional

Cost figures come from the same model behind every route page: handling plus transport. Handling is the crew loading and unloading, which depends on how much you own and not at all on how far it goes. Transport is a per-mile carrier rate that steps down across distance bands, from $4.00 per mile on the first 100 miles to $1.10 per mile on the long tail, for a 2-bedroom load. That is why the shortest corridor here, California to Nevada at 285 miles, prices a 2-bedroom at $1,600$3,225, while California to Florida at 2,650 miles, roughly 9× the distance, is $4,475$9,050, nowhere near 9× the price.

  • First 100 mi$4.00/mi
  • 100–500 mi$2.60/mi
  • 500–1,500 mi$1.60/mi
  • Over 1,500 mi$1.10/mi

Rates shown are for the 2-bedroom reference load and scale with home size. Full methodology, including the calibration anchors, is on the long-distance moving cost pillar.

Distance and drive-time FAQ

  • Each corridor uses a population-weighted driving distance between the two states' main population centers, not a straight-line measurement and not a capital-to-capital figure, because almost nobody moves between state capitals. Metro-to-metro pairs use that specific pair's real road mileage instead, which is why Los Angeles to Las Vegas and the statewide average for the same corridor rarely match.
