Long distance movers: costs, how to choose, and free quotes

A long-distance (or interstate) mover is a carrier licensed to transport household goods across state lines. Any company that moves you from one state to another must hold active USDOT and FMCSA operating authority, that federal licensing is what separates a real carrier from a local-only company or an unlicensed broker.

Full-service interstate moves typically run from about $1,725 for a studio to $14,600 for a 4+ bedroom home on a cross-country haul. A 2-bedroom move of roughly 1,500 miles lands around $3,425–$6,900. Distance, home size, time of year, and add-ons like packing set the final number.

Ask for the company's USDOT number and look it up at fmcsa.dot.gov, you'll see its authority status, insurance on file, and complaint history. Insist on an in-home or video survey before any deposit, be wary of large upfront payments, and avoid any quote far below every other bid.
