Packing for a long-distance move

A cross-country shipment is loaded, consolidated onto a line-haul trailer, and handled several more times than a local move, so it has to be packed for the road, not the driveway. Here's the method that survives the trip.

   Purge before you pack

   Transport scales with weight on a long haul, so declutter first. Donate, sell, or toss anything you won't want badly enough to pay to ship 1,500 miles.

   Buy real boxes, not free ones

   Long-distance shipments are stacked, consolidated, and handled several times. Use new, uniform, double-wall boxes and quality tape, sturdy cartons stack safely and won't crush in a trailer.

   Pack by room, label by room and contents

   Finish one room before starting the next. Label every box with the destination room and a short contents list, and keep a numbered inventory so nothing goes missing in transit.

   Weight low, cushion everything

   Heavy items (books, tools) go in small boxes; light items in large ones. Fill every gap so nothing shifts, a half-empty box collapses under the box above it on a long haul.

   Protect the fragile and the flat

   Wrap dishes vertically like records, double-box electronics in their original cartons where possible, and use mirror/picture cartons for glass and art. Mark these boxes FRAGILE on every side.

   Handle the do-not-ship list

   Movers won't (and shouldn't) load hazardous items, propane, aerosols, paint, ammunition, or perishables. Drain fuel from equipment and plan to carry plants and pets yourself.

   Pack an 'open first' and an 'essentials' box

   Set aside a box per person with chargers, medications, documents, basic tools, and a change of clothes. Keep valuables, IDs, and irreplaceable items with you, never on the truck.
